Before Chicago Boat Parties - The history of Charter Boats

Charter boats have been around for thousands of years, but their original design was for labor purposes and not for festive events. The first types of boats were constructed out of hollow tree trunks over 20,000 years ago, and these were called canoes. Famous individuals, such as Cleopatra, used more lavish boats. This was noted as she made her grand entrance on the River Cydnus in style in an extravagant vessel for the time. Only wealthy people during this time used charter yachts for pleasure, but boats were still primarily used for trading purposes and exploring. Christopher Columbus and his crew sailed on some fantastic looking charter boats and probably marveled at the sights and sounds of the ocean on his voyage across the seas toward America. Pleasure boating or party boats, which are used for celebrating special events did not begin until the advent of the portable gas engine. This innovative device began to change individuals attitudes about boating, and more people began to see charter boat sailing as a pleasure activity, rather than activity reserved strictly to commercial and labor purposes.

One of the first boats dates back to 2500 B.C. in ancient Egypt. This charter boat had huge oars and was used for transporting goods, such as food, and supplies for battles that raged during the day. By the 18th century steam powerboats were invented and this eventually gave way to electrically powered vessels. Gustave Trouve of France invented one of the first electrical powered boats in 1881. This boat moved by utilizing bichromate-potash batteries, but charging the battery became a problem until gas engine charter boats were developed. Gas engine boats created a stir of excitement, along with some controversy. There was a fear that Daimler gas engine boats had a higher risk of exploding. Gottlieb Daimler was aware of this problem and tested his engines on a regular basis in an effort to appease public scrutiny. Eventually in 1896, AMC of New York came up with a gas outboard engine, based off the original design of the Daimler engine. This opened the door to numerous American based motor vessels and eventually gave way to pleasure boating and boat party events. Britain also had a big influence on our pleasure boating experience. Sir Alfred Harmsworth encouraged individuals to sail boats in races and offered a trophy called the “Harmsworth Trophy” as a prize to the winner. As a result the MMA or Marine Motoring Association was formed and introduced to America. Americans formed their own association called the American Power Boat Association as a result and held Gold Cup races starting in 1904. Individuals now used boats to enjoy Chicago parties, sailing, fishing, racing, and luxury cruises all over the world.
